Product Overview: Winkhaus Gearboxes and Locks
Winkhaus gearboxes are renowned for their compact design, measuring 185mm high with a backset of +15mm, making them the smallest gearboxes available on the market. They feature a precise measurement of 64mm between the latch and deadbolt, and 63mm from the spindle to the top of the gearbox. A unique groove above the spindle facilitates the installation of handles with a screw positioned above the lever.
Lock Variants:
Winkhaus Cobra locks come equipped with both a latch and deadbolt within the gearbox. They are offered in three operational types: lift lever, split spindle, and key wind. Identification is straightforward with a color-coded sticker on the side of the gearbox:
- Blue: Lift lever
- Green: Split spindle
- Red: Key wind
Typically, we stock the green split spindle locks, as they provide versatility by allowing operation as a lever lock when a solid spindle is inserted through the follower. Notably, there is no price difference among the lock types, making the split spindle an ideal choice for a wider range of applications.
Installation and Replacement:
Winkhaus gearboxes are uniquely attached to the faceplate using rivets, which can be easily removed and replaced during gearbox swaps. This distinctive feature simplifies identification in the market. For detailed instructions on replacing a Winkhaus gearbox, please refer to our comprehensive guide and instructional video.
Important Note:
Be aware that older Winkhaus gearboxes may be attached with screws and feature a passivated yellow finish. The operational type can be identified by the sticker on the side (red for key wind and blue for lift lever). These older models were handed and are no longer in production.
Additional Products:
We also offer a variety of associated products for Winkhaus Cobra gearboxes, including multipoint door locks, keeps, spindles, handles, and various accessories.
Operation and Latch Reversal:
- Operation: Lift lever or split spindle
To reverse the latch, simply push in the latch until a screw appears at the back of the lockcase. Unscrew to remove the latch, reverse it, reinsert, and replace the screw.
Nightlatch Reversal:
The small rectangular slot adjacent to the side of the spindle hole contains a hollow black roll pin. Insert a flat-bladed screwdriver and push the pin to the opposite side to reverse the function.
Winkhaus cases are held on by pin rivets, which are located on the side of the case (one at the top and one at the bottom). To remove, simply knock the pins out with a punch. The originals can usually be reused; however, we do sell replacement pin rivets should you require them.
To Lock the Door:
-
On closing the door, the latch is automatically engaged.
-
Lift the handle up to engage the additional locking points.
-
Throw the deadbolt and lock the system by turning the key (on some brands, the deadbolt will be thrown by lifting the handle).
To Unlock the Door:
-
Unlock the system by turning the key.
-
Push the handle downwards to disengage the locking points.
-
A further quarter turn of the key will retract the latch.
