Product Overview: Mila Standard Multipoint Door Lock

The Mila Standard multipoint door lock is designed specifically for the passive door in a pair of French doors, featuring no locking points. This classic lock was widely used in residential doors until the mid-2000s and, while it is no longer part of Mila's current UPVC door lock range, it remains available from the original Italian manufacturer.

Identification and Compatibility

Identifying a classic Mila UPVC door lock is straightforward once removed from the door, thanks to its distinctive gearbox shape with triangular corners. However, recognizing it while still installed can be challenging, as various door and window companies have rebranded these locks. You may find stamps from brands like Coldseal, Barratt, Iseo, or Swiftframe, but rest assured, they all share the same underlying mechanism.

Gearbox Configurations

Mila gearboxes come in both latch-only and latch-and-deadbolt configurations, with options for single or double spindles.

  • Latch Only Versions:

    • Single spindle
    • Available backsets: 25mm, 28mm, 35mm, and 45mm
  • Latch and Deadbolt Versions:

    • Single spindle (92mm PZ) available in 35mm and 45mm backsets
    • Double spindle available only with a 35mm backset, featuring a 70mm/92mm PZ measurement

Despite the variety in backsets and operational options, the dimensions of Mila gearboxes are largely consistent, measuring 233mm high and the backset + 20mm wide. The latch measures 20mm high, the deadbolt is 30mm high, and there is an 80mm gap between the bottom of the latch and the top of the deadbolt.

Important Considerations

Some older locks may feature an offset or cranked connector, which is relevant when replacing a gearbox rather than a full-length lock. Replacement gearboxes are now only available with inline connectors, but they remain compatible with older locks. Adapting the drive gear behind the faceplate is necessary, which involves cutting a square hole in the drive gear to create a slot for proper functionality.

Operation Instructions: Lift Lever

To Lock the Door:

  1. Lift the handle upwards to engage the locking points.
  2. Secure the locking points and main deadbolt (if applicable) by turning the key.

To Unlock the Door:

  1. Unlock the system by turning the key.
  2. Push the handle downwards to disengage the locking points and retract the latch.

Measuring Guidelines

To ensure proper fitting and compatibility, here are some quick tips on how to measure the essential components of your door lock:

Backset Measurement: To measure the backset, take a ruler or tape measure and measure the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the keyhole. This measurement is crucial for ensuring that the lock fits correctly within the door frame.

Centres PZ Measurement: For the PZ measurement, measure the distance from the center of the keyhole to the center of the handle spindle hole. This ensures that both the lock and handle align perfectly for smooth operation.

Faceplate Measurement: To measure the faceplate, you will need to measure the width and height of the existing faceplate on your door lock. This will help you select the correct faceplate from the drop-down options available.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your Mila Standard multipoint door lock is installed correctly and functions as intended.
