Winkhaus Gearboxes Overview

Winkhaus gearboxes are designed for durability and ease of installation, available in three backsets: 35mm, 45mm, and 55mm, with a standard 92mm centre. Each gearbox is securely attached to the strip using two rivets and a screw, with spare rivets available under part number 2241553.

Handing and Installation

These locks are handed and cannot be reversed. When ordering, consider the door's hinge position: if the door opens inward and is hinged on the left, select a right-hand lock. Conversely, if it hinges on the right, opt for a left-hand lock.

Dimensions and Features

All Winkhaus gearboxes, except for the AV4 model, measure 185mm in height plus the backset (an additional 15mm), making them some of the smallest gearboxes available. They feature a 64mm distance between the latch and deadbolt, and 63mm from the spindle to the top of the gearbox. A unique groove above the spindle facilitates the installation of handles with a screw above the lever.

AV2 Multipoint Lock Gearboxes

The AV2 gearboxes are equipped with an alloy sprung latch and a nickel-plated steel deadbolt. Most AV2 locks include an independent central deadbolt, although a latch-only version is also available. Notably, AV2 gearboxes are handed, and while some models feature a latch reversal screw, the hooks cannot be reversed. It is crucial to select the correct handed gearbox when replacing a lock.

Installation and Replacement

Winkhaus gearboxes are attached to the faceplate with rivets, allowing for easy removal and replacement during swaps. This distinctive feature makes Winkhaus gearboxes easily identifiable in the market. For detailed instructions on replacing a Winkhaus gearbox, please refer to our guide and instructional video.

Older Models

Be aware that older Winkhaus gearboxes may be attached with screws and feature a passivated yellow finish. The operation of these locks is indicated by a sticker on the side (red = key wind, blue = lift lever). These older models are handed and are no longer available.

Locking Mechanism

Upon closing the door, the snib below the hooks engages with the strike plate, securing the hook bolts in a deadlocked position. To enhance security, turning the key will engage the central deadbolt.

Unlocking Process

To unlock, turn the key to withdraw the deadlock. You can then either turn the key again to retract the latch and hook bolts or pull the handle down to achieve the same result.
